2) what you are expected to do on our final seminar
Topic of the
paper (I know it's conditional, but you have to at least give us a rough idea) and 2 essay references should be submitted and
discussed on Jan 21st at the
essay workshop.
a) 2 essay references
as I stated earlier, at least ONE "REQUIRED READING" should be quoted in your final paper; and another reference source could either be from REQUIRED or REFERENCE readings. Beyond these 2 references, whichever sources you want to use are up to you.
I suppose you have our syllabus in hand, for instance, I have clearly indicated which ones are required readings and which are reference readings. We have made some adjustment to the syllabus for some seminar session, and thus you should refer to the finalised version of the syllabus, which you could download from here.

b) films
You are encouraged to use films to demonstrate your ideas. At least ONE film should be from our viewing list (refer to the finalised syllabus; which means you could use more films or even compare between them, but try to make your argument relevant)
3) NOTES on the Final Paper
a) Word Limit:2,000 words. (you could go over this limit)
Include the
following information at the top of the paper:
Your Name
Course Title
Date
Title of your Paper
|
b) Please engage with
at least two readings or texts from the required or supplementary
reading list; if you use film, at least one of the films should be from our viewing list. It should include a bibliography and use
the MLA citation style. You should select a topic (text/case/issue)
you find most interesting and most curious about, and/or you have confidence in
analyzing.
c) Your papers should
reflect your understanding and analysis of the chosen issue using the ideas,
concepts, and theories learned from the class. You should apply those ideas and
theories to a text and the related issues. A
good paper will first introduce (1) WHAT key ideas you will
discuss in relation to your chosen topic and highlight particular points that
interest you most (try to focus on no more than 3 key points); (2) analyze your
chosen text/case/issue/phenomenon in relation to some ideas in the readings.
Show with quotes and illustrative examples from your chosen text/case/issue/phenomenon
to elaborate HOW the ideas in the readings can be applied usefully to
analyze the topic of your interest. Elaborate on WHAT your insights are and explain WHY you think this way.
